Lost

The man lost everything that was not the Memories. Mortals aren't meant for this Knowledge, and it consumed the man from the inside out.

From the Dead came the Angel, who believed that They should be under His control.
The Woman in the Water decided it was time to find a mate.
The Snake and the Rose conceived a child.

The man forgot the girl, forgot how to work, forgot all but the Stories.  The man's last act was to create a record of what must have been his story, once.

The Doctor set out to find a willing mortal to save.
The Dead and the Emptiness faced off.
The Man and the Girl fought a war.
The Boy sought a family.
The Snake smote a woman for challenging Her.
The Angel tried to control the City
The Dead became many
The Dream awoke from His slumber

The man no longer remembers his own story. Perhaps someone else will.

The Black Wedding

Many, many aeons ago, when even They were still young, a Man appeared. None of Them knew where He'd come from or why He was there, and He certainly wasn't telling. He did not speak, not to them and not to the apes that would one day become humanity, and had not even a face to betray His true thoughts. He was not one of Them, and yet had power to match Them.

They knew the importance of bringing Him under their control, and so not a moment was wasted. First the Dog went to try and gauge His secrets, for an enemy with secrets can be forced to become an ally. The Man had no secrets to keep, however, and so it was the Boy's turn. The Boy froze the Man, causing Him to realize He was alone, but it was not enough.

The Man was now drawn to Them, but They needed a way to tie Him to Them for good. The Girl stepped forward then. She would bind Him to Herself in the most intimate of ways, binding Her Strings to His flesh. A wedding was arranged, and the Girl made him appendages out of Her String as a present for Her betrothed.

They did not find out until much later that He was not so easily controlled.

Overwritten

The Memories the man was gaining were becoming more and more deranged and disturbing and insistent the more of them manifested. The man's mind filled with thoughts and experiences of Beings far beyond mortal imaginings, thoughts of Them that needed to be shared.

The Memories seeped into every corner of the man's mind, replacing memories good and bad, old and new, tendrils of eldrich horrors seeping into the man's subconscious. The Stories needed to be told, but the man didn't know who to tell them to.

The Her in the Lake

Once, a long time ago, there was an ambitious man who wanted to be king. he was not royal, nor was he rich or in any way powerful, but he was very clever. Bloodlines and money were not the only way to get what he wanted.

he traveled far and wide, talking to powerful and important people before he found his answer. The Lake at the center of the kingdom was home to a beautiful Woman who had power mortals couldn't bear to even dream of. This ambitious man went to the Lake and spoke to the Woman, and It promised him all the power he could dream of, if he submitted himself to Her. he saw potential in her offer and took the bargain, promising to increase Her power a hundredfold with his rule. It gave him a sword to smite his enemies and a vial of the Water of Her Lake to persuade even the hardest hearts.

Magic was a more potent and powerful force than any sword, he soon discovered. his enemies were many, and yet a powerful force built up around him. The ambitious man built his forces until he was sure to win, then took them all to the Lake and bade them drink. he told them the water was blessed to ensure their victory, and he refilled his vial with more of Her precious Water. Though his men drank deeply and were consumed, upon Her instructions he had only a few scant drops. his men became the perfect army, brutal and unwavering, ready to carry out any orders. With Her blessing, he was more than capable of leading them to victory and taking over the kingdom.

Upon Her orders, his first act as king was to pour the remaining Water from the vial into the well that fed the entire castle, as well as the town surrounding it, and his subjects became the most loyal and hard working in all the land. Other kingdoms felt threatened by his rule, but victory was assured with Her and Her Water on his side.

he was an old man when an enemy's arrow finally struck him down, and It came from Her lake to take him, as promised.

Life Price

The man's life was secure, but the man's memory was even more compromised than expected. The man's childhood had been completely eradicated, but what happened next, the man did not expect. The blanks were being filled in, but the Memories were not the man's own.

They were Memories of times and places unbelievably foreign to the man. The Memories were unfathomable in scope and yet fit themselves neatly in the man's head. The Memories told a Story and made it clear to the man that the Story must be told.

The Memories made the man a vessel for the Story, and nothing more

False Hope

When the man awoke the next morning, it was clear that something had changed. The man was not immediately aware of what that something was, and believed the change to be a hallucination. The man was very wrong.

It started slowly. That first morning, the man awoke without any memory of second grade. The second afternoon, the man lost every birthday the man had ever had. Two days later, the man forgot high school entirely. By that point, the man knew what was happening, and believed it to be a blessing.

The man believed his prayer to be answered. He had surely heeded the man's prayers, and the man would be able to seek comfort in knowing He was a gentle master. Losing one's childhood was not a large price to pay, the man believed, for freedom and safety.

A week later, the man discovered the true price required.

Hubris

When it became clear to the man that he could not avoid Them, the man thought thought to be clever and choose which one of Them to fall prey to. The man thought perhaps to submit to one of Them as the girl had, and therefore have an escape.

It might have worked but for the man's own hubris. The man did not want to die, or even to be particularly inconvenienced. The man thought that too many of Them were too controlling or restrictive, and therefore chose to pursue the service of the one of Them that he perceived as unthreatening.

The man chose to start frequenting libraries, seeking Him out in the only way the man knew how. He has never been an easy one to find for the casual seeker, and the man started to see misfortune at the hands of others of Them.

The man started having strange dreams, seeing a Suited Figure out of the corner of his eye, being chased by a Dog and hearing Strange Voices. The man did not know what to do, with his plan unravelling, and so the man went to the library one last time.

The man fell prostrate in the most deserted corner, sobbing and begging Him to take the man into His service  so that the man could be saved. The man prayed for hours, until the library closed. The man thought He had denied the man's prayers, but the man was wrong. He had chosen the man for something both unique and horrifying.
